Water is essential for life and has played a central role in culture, religion, and spirituality for millennia. Yet, in many places, humanity is heading towards a water crisis or is already in the midst of one. Water resources are facing diverse threats: floods, droughts, declining groundwater levels, rising sea levels, water conflicts, and pollution.
The photo competition 'WALK OF WATER - Water for Peace and Prosperity' called on photographers worldwide last year to document the challenges surrounding water and the stories behind them. Organized by Onewater gUG in collaboration with the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme and the city of Burghausen, the competition was first presented at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris as part of the World Water Day celebrations on March 22nd.
The Haus der Fotografie and Onewater further curated and developed the stories. From July to November 2024, the museum on the world’s longest castle presented a new selection of 28 entries with more than 120 photographs and accompanying texts. The photo series are oriented towards the themes of the United Nations World Water Development Report, thus encompassing the entire planet. The resulting stories go beyond mere facts and, with their authenticity and intensity, encourage reflection and action. They show the challenges, but also solutions for the global water crisis.
